Lesson 3: Lesson 2 Part 1

Logo design

In our second lesson on EssGraD, we were introduced to logo design. Every brand and company has their own unique logo that lets buyers recognize them. Do you have any logos in mind that you will recognize immediately when you see them?

We learnt the 5 Principles of Effective Logo Design which are:
1. A logo must be simple
-Something unique to the company without being overdrawn
2. A logo must be memorable
-Make it simple, appropriate, and easy to remember
3. A logo must be timeless
-It has to continue to be effective in the future
4. A logo must be versatile
-Be able to work in a single colour and across a range of mediums and applications
5. A logo must be appropriate
-Suits its intended purpose/company

These principles will be used by me in my analysis, critics and discussions of logo designs.

We were shown some logos of famous companies' which were cool as they had hidden symbols within their logos. Here are some examples:
Logos with hidden symbols
If you look closely, you will realise that FedEx has an arrow sign pointing to the right between the 'E' and 'x'. There are mammoth's tusk that form the 'M' logo for Mammoth. Lastly, the 3 white eagles come together to form another eagle in their midst. See how logos can be put together to have such hidden messages? These are effective logos as not only are they simple and easy to recognize, they leave a lasting impression on consumers as consumers are amused and impressed by their hidden symbols.

Lastly, we were introduced to Sketching. Sketching is important in any form of design as it is the process where most design ideas are formed and processed. With a pencil and paper, designers are able to throw out all the design ideas they have, rapidly develop concepts, form a basic layout, explore different visuals, refine their designs and show them to their clients for approval. They are able to work with their ideas efficiently, taking out those that they feel won't work, or putting different ideas together to form a good one. As our tutor mentions, 'The first design is not the best design.'. Sketching allows designers to visualize the designs they have in mind and re-work any part of it they feel isn't good enough until it is easily. I never thought sketching did much, but now I see why it is important.

Apple
I would like to talk about a brand that has an effective logo. Apple's logo is easily recognized by anyone in the world. Since many years ago, it has been a prominent and famous brand, with a large and expanding pool of consumers. A huge reason why people can so easily identify this logo with Apple is because it includes ALL the 5 Principles of Effective Logo Design. As with its name, Apple's logo showcases an apple that has been bitten off at the side- simple. Its colour gives it a very techy feel, which is appropriate for its company which sells technological items. It is versatile, working with only one colour with its black and white version. Lastly, it is timeless and memorable as apples - the common fruit - will always be around and people will be able to match the image of an apple to the company as it is simple and appropriate.

That is it for this entry. Thanks!
